Gold Town

With its large gold deposits, the people of Paracale town in the Philippines' Camarines Norte province have relied on mining as a source of living for centuries. Although banned, the town's small-scale gold mining industry employs different generations of workers, from grown-up men who have been mining all their lives to minors who are supposed to be in school.

It's risky business. In search of gold, Paracale's miners dive into muddy waters for hours, breathing only through a hose connected to a compressor. But they are willing to take any risk, if it means having food to put on the table.

CCTV's Barnaby Lo spent time with Paracale's miners, some as young as 15, and their families. The government has pledged to stop child labor in the province, even giving families alternative sources of livelihood such as fishing. But for the town's residents, a bucket full of fish is nothing compared to an an ounce of gold.
