ISIL's occupation of Mosul and other areas in northern Iraq involved the plunder and destruction of various cultural treasures. Following the extremist group's defeat, the country's cultural artifacts and heritage sites lay in ruins. Tony Cheng witnessed the immense damage that ISIL wrought as they attempted to rewrite history and wipe out anything that didn’t fit their worldview.

The long-running conflict between the military and ethnic groups in Myanmar has displaced thousands upon thousands of people. Having lost their homes and possessions, some of the country’s internally displaced people or IDPs have fallen into drug addiction. In Myanmar’s Kachin state, Dave Grunebaum visited camps where heroin addicts are undergoing rehabilitation.
