Transforming Lives and Building Bridges in Xinjiang


This week’s edition of Assignment Asia highlights efforts to transform the lives of people in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and build bridges between them.

 

A government initiative in 2017 sought to recruit young women from some of Xinjiang’s poorest villages to work in another province, aiming to empower them and help lift their families out of poverty. We follow the women from Hotan county as they took the life-changing decision of leaving their families and villages for the first time in search of a better life

 

In recent years there has been a stronger push to teach Mandarin in Xinjiang’s schools to maintain harmony and a peaceful coexistence between Han Chinese and the region’s Uyghur majority. Our reporter Han Bin looks into the impact of the bilingual education policy in the region’s rural areas.
