One of the enduring features of ancient life in Beijing is the hutong or alleys lined by courtyard houses. Through time they have undergone wear and tear, and so an architecture firm has taken on the task of renovating the old houses while preserving their cultural value. But as Wang Mangmang reports, though some residents have embraced it, others are resisting change.

Pakistan has a colorful hustory of empires and conquests, and their remnants are visible to this day. Unfortunately, after many years of neglect, a number of ancient buildings are in a state of disrepair. Danial Khan visited some decaying historical structures in Lahore, and looked into efforts by government and experts to bring them back to their old glory.

Tens of thousands of people died and lost their homes when an earthquake hit Nepal in April 2015. A daunting task of rebuilding followed, and one man and his firm are doing it differently: using native materials like earth and bamboo instead of concrete to reconstruct houses. As Pearly Jacob tells us, houses made of native materials are said to be capable of withstanding the strongest quakes.
